Specimen Required: Patient Preparation:
Collect: 24-hour urine. Urine must be refrigerated during collection.
Specimen Preparation: Add 1 g boric acid per 100 mL urine. Transfer 4 mL aliquot of urine from a 24-hour collection to an RDL Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL) Record total volume and collection time interval on transport tube and test request form. Also acceptable: Preserved urine if the pH of the specimen is adjusted to 2-4 with 6M HCl or 50 percent acetic acid or unpreserved urine if frozen immediately after collection.
Storage/Transport Temperature: Frozen. Also acceptable: Refrigerated, if preserved with HCl or acetic acid.
Stability: Ambient: 4 hours; Refrigerated (with preservative): 5 days; Frozen: 1 month
